Getting Started

Plans
Whether you have drawings, plans or even just an idea, we will be happy to meet with you to discuss your particular requirements.

Materials
Materials, design, colours, your style and final vision are just some of the many things we will need to consider.

Scope
We will, at your request, generate a comprehensive scope of work document for further discussion, so that you as a client, and we as craftsmen, know the exact nature of the project to be completed.
Once the scope is agreed and we are happy that we can work together, then we will proceed to cost the project fully for further consideration.
We will then make sure that all necessary plans and permits are in order for the project to proceed.
We will provide and provision utilities where needed, manage sub-contractors and other personnel and operate a safe and efficient project.

Scheduling
Scheduling is always tracked very closely and we will provide you with up-to-date reports so that all phases mesh seamlessly at each step along the way.

Building With
Nantucket in Mind

This has been in local parlance for many years now and encompasses more than just design considerations.
The unique attributes of island living present us with their own set of hurdles and hoops when bringing an idea to fruition. Part of the charm of the island is embodied in challenges that the mainland takes for granted. Logistics, availability of resources and materials and a tendency towards fog and dampness!
These things can help to inform various choices - dwelling size and orientation, specified materials for weather worthiness, energy requirements and methods of use etc.

HDC Submissions &

Knowing the ins and outs of the local town commitees and departments is key to the timely advancement of any project.
The Historic District Commission is an integral part of the design/build process and the necessary starting point. The HDC is responsible for maintaining the look and feel of old-time Nantucket and as such will review all plans with particular emphasis on mass sizes and fenestration.
With many years of experience in this area coupled with the legal acumen to get things done, we are happy to shepherd your project through the process.

Architecturial Liason

We work closely with your architect or designer to ensure the compatibilty of plans on paper with field verification of physical requirements.
From the concrete footings to the sheen of the sash locks, we generate a comprehensive listing of what goes into your project.
This gives us a definitive path while allowing us to adjust to whatever you need, on the fly.

All Trades Supplied &
Warranted

Having curated excellent relationships with numerous sub-contractors in all the trades, along with on- and off-island suppliers and excellent rapport with the town's building officials, you'll be confident of your time-frame and procedural milestones.

Local, Regional &
National Suppliers

Always important is being connected to the latest in materials and supplies.
We maintain the abilty to source any custom materials or fabrications as required by the project.
Using specification worksheets and staying up to date on methodologies and the latest in hardware and technology means your designs and plans will come to fruition.

We built an addition on to this Low Beach Road cottage with a new bedroom and cathedral ceilings. Then it was time to re-consider the necessary appointments beginning with the kitchen.
The bathroom soon followed, as did the library.
With the close attention to details, Melanie of Melanie Gowen Designs served up the most efficient use of space while maintaining an open and elegant feel.
Airy and bright, we were able to reproduce her designs in the bespoke cabinetry and built-ins throughout, so that practicality and beauty blossom seamlessly.

The client's new house was in need of some finishing touches and their desire to bring additional warmth and a pastoral sense brought us quite a challenge.
The rough materials were to stay rough! Inspired by architects Bates + Masi, the beauty of the rough materials was worked and adapted into the finished element while maintaining functionality and practical necessities.
Methods of construction were decided upon and approved, and any exposed fasteners were the old nails of 100 years earlier. It came out very well.

A start to finish revamping...

This series shows the construction of a large pergola in the Surfside area, not far from the beach.
Large, solid cedar members are used throughout, anchored into metal brackets set in concrete.
Our thanks to Dennis for this work - it was a pleasure to make and very satisfying to finish.

The Island of Tuckernuck is not quite remote but still requires a daily boat ride there and back. Not a ferry. A Carolina skiff! With all trades and all materials hauled up from a beach landing.
Tim Collette Builders undertook this task for his clients and brought Gable End Construction in for some assistance. It was nice not to have to worry about the management end of things and to be able to fully focus on making the building storm-ready and hurricane-proof.
Sited as it is facing directly south with a half-mile of flat sand-plain to the beach, this had to be well-protected.
We designed and built a triple pocket-door system to fit into the space that use to have some rolling barn doors. Careful fitting and the highest attention to weather-proofing was required while maintaining functionality.
Next, the storm-proof cedar barn doors were installed along with the window shutters and single- sized storm doors.
Everything is battened down from the inside with solid brass and bronze marine-worthy hardware.

The clients's wishes to have a pantry that was also a piece of furniture drove the design and layout of this piece.
Functionality was just as important as aesthetics and several features were included to accentuate this.
With fully adjustable shelves, a spice drawer, pop-out shelves for temporary loading/unloading, the inside is fully configurable for all tastes.
Attention to detail in the selection and use of solid cherry materials allowed grain and pattern continuation across the doors and structure.
A satin oil/varnish finish adds perfect lustre and ease of maintenance.

At Nabe restaurant on Easy Street we had a chance to design and build a unique table.
Envisioned as a bar-height table for larger gatherings and more intimate meals, the design called for a bamboo top, sushi style, set against the striking contrast and pure strength of mahogany.
With solid six-inch by six-inch tapered legs, set on adjustable feet, the table is 16 feet long and 3-1/2 feet wide.
Taking nine of us to carry the top alone into the building and a further four to help set it on it's trestle, it really made a statement.

It's great to have repeat clients of whatever size, but the people at The Nantucket Hotel are a pleasure to work with. We have provided interior trimwork and cabinet work in various new locations there where they added new rooms and a new wing for expanded service.
Existing specifications were used to provide matching work in all new rooms.
A custom-designed and built stowaway double bed with secret cubbies, closets and drawers made maximum use of apartment space.

Removing the driftwood effect harks back to the original days where the entrance harbours promises of the interior woodwork delights.
